Google Business Profile

A Practical Guide to Improving Your Google Business Profile

Prepared 4 October 2026

Improving a Business Profile starts with accuracy. Before adding more content, check that a customer can understand what the business does, when it is available, and how to get in touch.

1. Confirm who manages the profile

Clarify ownership and the people who need access. Use the account-management options provided by Google rather than sharing passwords. If verification is required, follow the methods Google makes available to your business; the process and outcome are controlled by Google.

2. Review the core information

Check the business name, main category, phone number, website, hours where applicable, and genuine service area or customer-facing address. The information should describe the actual business. Avoid adding unrelated keywords or suggesting locations that do not exist.

3. Explain what customers can expect

Review the service information for accuracy and usefulness. Describe the work in language customers use. If a service requires a consultation or quote, make that clear instead of implying that every job has the same scope or price.

4. Use current, relevant photos

Choose images that help a customer recognize and understand the business: real premises where appropriate, real work, or relevant products and services. Keep outdated images under review. Do not present stock imagery as a completed customer project.

5. Make the linked website useful

Open the website link from your profile on a phone. Does it lead to the right place? Can a visitor quickly understand the service and take the next step? Check calling, booking, and enquiry options, including what happens after a form is submitted.

6. Invite and respond to authentic reviews

Ask for honest feedback without making a positive review a condition of any benefit. Respond in a way that respects the customer’s privacy. A thoughtful response should address the issue without sharing account details, private discussions, or sensitive information.

7. Keep changes up to date

A profile needs attention when the business changes. Add a regular review to your workflow so hours, contact details, and service information remain current. Assign responsibility so updates are not left to chance.

8. Read performance with context

Use the available performance information to ask better questions about customer behavior. Record the period being reviewed and relevant business changes. Do not treat a single movement in visibility as proof that one edit caused every enquiry that followed.

A short review checklist

  • Accurate identity and contact information.
  • Appropriate category and real service coverage.
  • Useful service descriptions and relevant photographs.
  • A working website and contact journey.
  • A process for genuine feedback and timely updates.
